If you’re a woman, chances are that you spend a lot of time on your appearance. You might have to do your hair or makeup for work or special occasions. Or maybe you just like to take care of yourself because it feels good and makes you feel confident about the way you look. Either way, we all know how important it is to be as beautiful as possible!
But sometimes things can get overwhelming: there are so many products out there claiming they will make us more gorgeous than ever before! And then we end up with an overflowing bathroom cabinet full of products that we rarely use, but somehow always seem to buy again because hey—maybe this one will be the one that finally does the trick.
But what if we told you about a few products and beauty hacks out there that, even though they sound kind of strange, actually work? Some of them are a bit bizarre or might make you feel a little self-conscious at first—but trust us: once you try our tips and tricks, you’ll realize just how much time and money these awesome secrets will save you! Here are 12 useful beauty tips to help your personal care routine be as simple as possible:
1. Use petroleum jelly for healthier hair.
Petroleum jelly has plenty of uses both inside and outside the house. You can use it to remove sticky residue from stickers, to soothe irritations on your dog’s skin, to protect your hands when you’re gardening…and to make your hair shine. All you have to do is apply a small amount of petroleum jelly onto your palms and then carefully work it through the ends of your damp hair after washing it. Then just let it dry naturally!
2. Use baking soda for an exfoliating facial scrub.
This beauty hack works super well if you tend to get flaky or dry patches on your face that can become unsightly during the winter months. Simply mix some baking soda into enough water to create a thick paste, apply it gently all over clean skin and leave it on for 2-3 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water. Your face will feel incredibly smooth and refreshed!
3. Use a dark liner for the whites of your eyes.
This trick is not exactly rocket science: you use dark eyeliner to make your eyes look bigger, brighter and more attractive! Apply it right above the lashes of your upper lid (within two centimetres) and then smudge it slightly with a Q-tip to remove any harsh lines. Then, move on to your lower lash line: apply the eyeliner along this section, but don’t blend or smudge it—leave it looking sharp and defined. Now you’ll have 4-5 times brighter eyes than normal, so simple eye shadow will do all the rest of the work in making them stand out!
4. Use a thin layer of petroleum jelly to remove any makeup.
We all know how gross it is when you put on your favorite lipstick, only to find that it’s smeared, spread over your face or licked off during lunchtime. Don’t panic! Just take a little bit of petroleum jelly and rub it into the skin around your lips before applying lipstick—this will create an invisible seal that will keep anything from moving anywhere else but onto your sweet-smelling lips!
5. Use apple cider vinegar for healthier hair and acne prevention.
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has been used as a natural remedy for decades now. It contains enzymes which make it perfect for treating dandruff, dry scalp and irritated skin. Mix one part ACV with two parts water, massage it into your scalp and let it sit for a few minutes before you wash it out. You’ll have to do this every day for a couple of weeks until the problem gets completely resolved—but then you can go back to doing this treatment once or twice a month whenever needed!
6. Apply an antiperspirant deodorant at night to end sweaty armpits during summer (and winter!).
We all love warm weather and spending time outside, but there is one thing we do not like about those things: feeling sweaty! The solution? Just apply some antiperspirant deodorant onto your armpits right before going to bed and then rinse it off in the morning. It might sound like an odd thing to do, but this simple trick really does work wonders!
7. Apply Kool-Aid (or a similar brand) on your hair for super bright colors!
Remember when you were young and loved to play with different scrunchies, ribbons and barrettes? And remember how much fun it was to dye your hair using Kool-Aid because you could get such bright colors? Well, there’s nothing stopping you from going back to that stage of your life today—and even better: this time around you can have neat streaks instead of just a random mess all over your head! First step: pick a hair color from their long list of options and mix it with water to create a thick paste. Then, apply the mixture onto your hair and let it dry—simple!
8. Use Nair or another depilatory cream to get rid of arm hairs that won’t go away no matter how many times you tweeze them.
It’s not exactly pretty seeing hairy arms on girls, but finding the right moment to get rid of those pesky hairs can be rather difficult sometimes. You could go for waxing, but all that heating up is really painful! There’s an easier solution: just pick up one of these depilatory creams instead and save yourself a lot of trouble (and pain!) in the long run.
It’s really simple: just apply the cream onto your arm (make sure to follow the instructions on the label), wait for 10 minutes and then wipe it off! No pain, no fuss—and no hair either!
9. Use Vaseline to remove cherry angiomas (those little red bumps).
You know when you get one of those annoying tiny red bumps that just won’t go away? I bet you could guess what I’m talking about! Just rub some petroleum jelly or Vaseline into them before going to bed, leave it on overnight and wash it off in the morning with warm water. After a few days they will be completely gone—no more need to try out weird stuff like apple cider vinegar!
10. Use nail polish remover to clean your beauty tools.
How often do you disinfect your makeup brushes? Probably not daily because that’s a rather tedious process—not to mention how quickly it can get expensive buying all the different products needed for this task! Instead, why don’t you just save some time and effort by cleaning them with some nail polish remover instead? Just dab a bit onto a paper towel or cotton ball, swipe it over your brush bristles and then let it sit there for about five minutes before rinsing it off under cold water. You’ll be surprised at how good they will look afterwards!
11. Fill a small spray bottle with 50/50 water and ACV, spritz your face before applying moisturizer for a great skin toner.
When you’re buying toners to prepare your skin for moisturizing, don’t bother paying attention to the label that tells you what it is supposed to do! If you want something that will make your skin look great, apply some diluted apple cider vinegar onto your face instead. It balances the pH level of your skin, kills off bacteria, reduces acne and makes it much smoother! You can either mix equal amounts of vinegar and water in a spray bottle or just use one part vinegar to two parts water—either way works just fine!
12. Fill small spray bottle with 50/50 water and witch hazel, spritz before applying moisturizer to reduce puffiness.
Puffy eyes are no fun for anyone, but there’s a super easy solution to them: use a spray bottle filled with equal amounts of water and witch hazel instead! It will make your skin look great and feel much smoother too—no more appearance of those annoying little bags under your eyes! Just remember to shake the bottle well before spraying it onto your face (on top of your makeup is probably best) because the components tend to separate if you leave them overnight like that.
13. Rub lemon juice on cotton wool pads or paper towels, place over closed eyes for 10 minutes for an excellent under-eye treatment.
While it’s not exactly a miracle worker in the realm of wrinkles, rubbing some lemon juice onto cotton wool pads or paper towels and placing them on your closed eyes for a few minutes is an excellent way to get rid of dark circles. There’s no need for crazy chemicals either—just trust Mother Nature!
14. Rinse off salt water with cool water after swimming in the sea/pool for minimized sun damage.
If you want to protect your skin from harmful UV rays but don’t want to bother buying sunscreen every time you go swimming, just do this instead: rinse off salt water with cool water afterwards! It will significantly reduce how much sun damage you will have later on. Don’t worry about looking like a prune—this is a common side-effect!
15. Use a cotton pad to remove all your makeup before going to bed, apply toner and moisturizer afterwards for better skin in the morning.
This is probably one of the most time efficient beauty tips I have ever come across: instead of taking an hour or more each night removing your makeup with micellar water, cleansing milk, face wipes etc., just use a cotton pad soaked in some toner instead! It will take only about five minutes and you will have much cleaner looking skin in the morning because there’s less dirt stuck to it. Just don’t forget to apply your normal moisturizer afterwards so that your skin can repair itself while you sleep!
16. Use a cotton pad soaked in tea tree oil to spot-treat pimples, scars and dark circles under your eyes.
Tea tree oil has many of the same anti-bacterial properties of apple cider vinegar! If you want to get rid of some blemishes quickly (or even if you don’t), just apply some diluted tea tree oil on them with a cotton pad or paper towel—you will see the results quite soon. Just make sure it doesn’t get into your eyes because that can REALLY hurt!
17. Fill bottle cap with warm water, soak cotton pads in it before applying toner/moisturizer for extra hydration.
Here’s another cool tip on how to avoid drying out your skin: just soak some cotton pads in warm water and use them to apply toner and moisturizer afterwards! This will help hydrate the rest of your face and give it a younger, smoother look.
18. Remove pimples with toothpaste before going to sleep for less noticeable redness in the morning.
For those pesky breakouts that never seem to go away no matter what you do—just let The Mentholatum Botanicals Clear Max Clearing Acne Spot Fast Fix ($10) take care of them! Just make sure to cleanse your face really well after using this product because it does have a strong smell. And don’t worry about leaving residue behind or getting discoloured teeth—the active ingredient is completely non-toxic!
19. Use toothpaste as a spot treatment for acne and scars.
Don’t be thrown off by the fact that you probably use toothpaste to get rid of pimples already—there’s an actual reason behind it: hydrogen peroxide, not sodium lauryl sulfate! But if you don’t like the idea of putting such a strong chemical on your skin (or can’t find any at home), just use some plain white toothpaste instead. Just make sure to rinse your face well after using this trick because all those chemicals can irritate your skin. Oh and always remember: never ever swallow toothpaste if it tastes minty fresh!
20. Use an old mascara tube to store cotton tips for easy access and hygiene.
There are actually some great benefits of using cotton swabs besides cleaning your ears—for example, keeping them clean! You can do this by simply transferring them into an empty (washed) mascara/eye liner tube after use. This way you won’t need to wash the actual cotton tip applicator every time you want to use it again, making things much more convenient. Just make sure it’s completely dry before putting it back in its place or else there might be fungus growing inside!
